Sierra W. Malis

Sierra W. Malis currently works as an Osteologist for the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History’s Repatriation Office. She was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona and received her BS in Anthropology from the University of Arizona and her MA from Mississippi State University.

Over the last few years, Sierra has served as the Co-Bioarchaeologist for the Aklis Project on St. Croix, USVI, served as assistant Bioarchaeologist for the Villa Romana di Poggio Gramignano Archaeological Project (VRPG), interned with the Bureau of Land Management in efforts to repatriate NAGPRA-eligible remains, and at the Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner in efforts to identify unknown decedents.

Sierra has worked with a number of professionals and students from universities around the nation concerning ethically-driven research focused on re-humanizing and reconstructing the personhood of individuals in both past- and present-day communities.
